Microscopic appearance: Microcytic hypochromic anisocytosis. Hematopoiesis and megakaryopoiesis are markedly suppressed. Marrow is diffusely infiltrated with blasts which are medium to large size, with high N:C ratio, granular cytoplasm, open nuclear chromatin containing multiple nucleoli. Leukocytes, plasma cells and macrophages reduced. No granular or lymphoid aggregates seen. Iron stain: Reticulin grade II.
